Bruce Jenner on Transitioning
Bruce Jenner,  who has been constantly under the eyes of the media came out with a revelation that was shocking to many people. She announced that she identifies as a woman and is going through a transition. After this revelation, Bruce didn't truly get a chance to tell her story until the ABC interview with Diane Sawyer. In watching the first part of the interview I got a glimpse of the struggle Bruce faced. Bruce was a super-star athlete in the 1973 Olympics and recently starred in the popular reality show Keeping up With the Kardashians. The reality show is what Bruce is known for most in this generation but nevertheless she is a public figure. Because, Bruce was constantly followed by camera. I was shocked to see there was a different part of her that was always hidden. In the interview Bruce clarified that this was something that followed her life since she was a child. Bruce even took female hormones in the early 1980s to began transition. In addition some of Bruce's close family knew about her gender identity crisis. Although I have never been interested in Bruce Jenner and Keeping up With the Kardashians, I was really curious when this announcement was made.
Diane Sawyer seemed generally respectful throughout the interview, but she bothered me when she didn't use the correct gender pronouns when she gave a preview to the interview. Referring to Bruce as "him" might be easier but one should have enough decency to use correct pronouns. Other than that I enjoyed the interview and I think it was very necessary. Bruce is an example to all the struggling transgender people in the world. Transgender people are constantly being killed, harassed, and beaten simply for who they are. Bruce was brave for coming out with this truth. I highly recommend this video especially to those of you who are unaware on issues of gender identity. It can be educational but you must be open minded .

  1. I personally watched this interview and was also very impressed and moved by the side of Bruce she shared. It was a positive way for Bruce to share her journey and help the thousands of other transgender people out there struggling. Jenner has the power to make a difference in our world and using the media to share this message was very brave and definitely a step in the right direction. I respect Bruce for everything she has done and her ability to share such a difficult time in her life. This is definitely an example of positive media that I think it will contribute to a more open minded society.

  2. After years and years of watching the show, "Keeping Up with the Kardashians," I would've never guessed that Bruce Jenner had an inner gender crisis. The media had portrayed him as the masculine male of the show, not once did they show an "feminine" side of him. I'm glad that Bruce Jenner was able to come out of his shell because as you said, "transponders are often harassed, killed, etc." Since he is a well known public figure, I believe that Bruce had inspired many transgender to come out and be who they are.
